GET OUTSIDE: How to enjoy spring weather and the great outdoors during COVID-19

As most of us attempt to make the best of being stuck at home over the coming weeks, it can start to wear on anyone. However, there is quite the silver lining to the time of year this is happening—it is SPRING! Even with the guidelines imploring us to social distance while being outside, there are many options for getting outdoors and enjoying all the longer days have to offer, at a safe distance from others.  

Rediscover your own outside space

In our spring cleaning blog from earlier this month, we tackled how to prep your patio for warmer weather and clean and organize your garage or shed. This is also the perfect time to setup a cozy spot outside to soak up the sun on upcoming sunny days and perhaps even use your laptop to check a few work emails while breathing in fresh air. If your new work-from-home situation keeps you indoors, set aside the lunch hour for eating outside. Grab a blanket and make it a picnic with the kids to break up e-learning and listen to the birds sing. Every few days, take a walk around your property and notice what is blooming and coming back to life after the winter months. If you enjoy yoga or body-weight exercises, find a roomy area to practice in your yard or on your patio or driveway.

Take a walk or run

It sounds so simple, but sometimes it is hard to break from our daily routine and make the time for a walk around the block. Especially if you live in an apartment or city-center and don’t have a yard to enjoy, a breath of fresh air truly can change your mindset. Walking or running by yourself or alongside those in your household can boost your energy and your mood. Try to notice the trees and flowers starting to sprout alongside your route. It’s a fact that just 20 minutes spent in nature can reduce stress! And, we could all use a bit of that right now.

Hop on a trail

If you’re lucky enough to live near the Loveland Bike Trail or a park that offers more secluded, open spaces and trails, enjoying a bike ride or nature hike can refuel the spirit! Biking and hiking are wonderful exercise and having a river or stream to view along the way is a bonus. In and around the Loveland bike trail area, there are quite a few coffee shops and eateries offering walk-up windows for carryout food and drink. This is a great way to get outside and enjoy the sunny weather while also supporting our local businesses at this challenging time. Stop by Graeters for an ice cream cone or Mile 42 for coffee!

Whether you are able to get outside with your kiddos to chalk your walks or enjoy a brisk walk around your neighborhood with your dog, there are many ways to appreciate the changing season right now. We know the days of enjoying large friend and family gatherings again are just around the corner. But until then, there are many ways to break free of the monotony of being indoors and enjoy the blooming of our own backyard spaces, roads, trails and parks.
