Green with Gratitude: Living near nature improves your health

December 16, 2019

This holiday season, in addition to being grateful for delicious treats and family gatherings, we’re appreciating the great outdoors! We all know how good it feels to watch the trees sway and sparkle on a morning walk, but did you know it could actually extend your life?

A fountain of youth

According to a Harvard study and Washington Post article, people who live in more green, natural areas enjoy improved mental health, less stress, increased physical activity and greater social engagement. Overall, in the study of more than 100,000 females, “Higher levels of green vegetation were associated with decreased mortality.”

Howard Frumkin, Professor Emeritus at University of Washington, teaches on theories of how nature affects mental health. The “biophilia” hypothesis suggests that humans have evolved to prefer natural environments that are essential to their thriving. “Something about contact with nature is soothing and restorative and thereby good for mental health,” said Frumkin.

The best of both

It is no wonder more people want to live in areas that offer easy access to nature and outdoor living. However, a comfortable home that is close to prime amenities—such as great schools, dining, shopping and entertainment—can be a conflicting priority. Is it possible to enjoy the full benefits of living closer to nature while still desiring a home near your favorite conveniences?

According to the study—yes! The results did not significantly change between urban and suburban settings. So, it is possible to get your green on and enjoy modern living at the same time. In fact, all of this can coexist in a stately, natural setting and choice location.
